Galkot, Mar. 2: The Khatekhola rural municipality ward no. 7 in Baglung has taken up a noble initiative of replacing thatched-roof houses of the poor with corrugated sheets.
Last year, the ward office put corrugated sheets over the roof of 26 homes of the 85 houses that it plans to cover in its jurisdiction. This year, corrugated sheets have been distributed to nine houses already and the remaining would be addressed in the new plan, said ward chair Prem Lamichhane.
The ward office had spent 700,000 rupees last year but only 200,000 rupees has been allocated for this year. The replacement of the thatched-roof has also decreased the risk of fire for the occupants, Lamichhane said.
Majority of the households living under thatched-roof houses are from the Dalit community and indigenous nationalities. The office provides them with corrugated sheets free of cost, while the remaining cost is borne by the concerned household. RSS
