New Delhi, Apr. 20: India and Russia are set to expand their military tie. And in an important signal to the world, the two nations will conduct their first-ever tri-services joint exercise this year. The exercise will be conducted in Russia and would include military components of the Army, Indian Air Force and the Navy, top Defence Ministry sources told.
The Indian armed forces have been doing joint exercises of all three services on their own but it will be the first instance for India to do such exercise with another country.
Militaries of both the countries have been exercising for long under the ‘Indra’ series. However, this will be the first-ever joint exercise that could use land forces and equipment like T-90 tanks, IAF fighter jets Sukhoi-30MKI and naval warships.
The Integrated Defence Staff of the Defence Ministry will lead the exercises. Officials also pointed to the commonalities between the Indian and Russian military platforms. The military delegations of two sides have had a planning conference and will meet again to finalise the finer points.(TT)
