Indian Chief Justice Pledges Deeper Judicial Cooperation During Nepal Visit

09/06/2025

Kathmandu, Sept. 6: Chief Justice of India Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai has expressed commitment to strengthen judicial cooperation between Nepal and India, emphasizing the need for continued exchange of practices and experiences.

Gavai, who arrived in Kathmandu at the invitation of Nepal’s Chief Justice Prakash Man Singh Raut, is in Nepal to attend the Nepal–India Judicial Dialogue. Addressing the dialogue, he highlighted that courts are not only interpreters of law but also guardians of democracy and the constitution. He noted that he has often referred to significant rulings of the Supreme Court of Nepal as references.

The dialogue focused on the evolving role of the judiciary, judicial reforms, and recent verdicts. Both sides reaffirmed the importance of enhancing institutional collaboration to meet the challenges of modern governance.

In April 2025, the Supreme Court of India and the Supreme Court of Nepal signed a Memorandum of Understanding to consolidate judicial cooperation. The ongoing dialogue builds upon this agreement, underscoring the commitment of both countries to deepen legal collaboration.

Gavai also stressed that judicial exchanges foster mutual understanding and strengthen constitutional governance, adding that Nepal and India must move forward together in ensuring justice and upholding democratic values.
