Kathmandu, Sept. 15: Newly appointed Prime Minister Sushila Karki on Sunday added three ministers to her cabinet.
Karki, who recommended the dissolution of parliament as per the demand of the Gen Z protesters, selected the ministers based on their expertise. None of them were lawmakers in the dissolved parliament.
The new ministers are Advocate Om Prakash Aryal, former Managing Director of Nepal Electricity Authority Kulman Ghising, and former Finance Secretary Rameswore Khanal. Aryal will oversee both the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Ministry of Law, Ghising will lead the Ministry of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation, and Khanal will head the Ministry of Finance.
Aryal is known for legal battles on social justice and recently served as legal adviser to Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah. Ghising is credited with ending nationwide power cuts in May 2018 while heading the NEA and was later removed by former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli.
According to sources, the swearing-in ceremony for the three ministers is scheduled for Monday.
Karki indicated her cabinet will remain small, with additional ministries added as needed. Earlier on Sunday, after assuming office at Singha Durbar, she sought nationwide support, saying her goal is to hold elections, not cling to power.
Calling the September 9 arson and vandalism a “criminal act,” Karki vowed to bring those responsible to justice. “How can those who commit such acts be called Nepali? This was carried out in an organized manner. Those responsible must be punished,” she said.
On Friday, Karki instructed Chief Secretary Ek Narayan Aryal and other officials to repair destroyed police offices with local help if necessary.
The September 9 unrest saw thousands attack major government institutions, including Singha Durbar -- the government’s administrative complex – as well as the Parliament, the President’s Office, the Supreme Court, and multiple police stations. Chief Secretary Aryal informed the PM that 72 people were killed in the violence. The government has decided to recognize them as martyrs and provide each bereaved family with Rs 1 million in compensation.
Meanwhile, Karki appointed senior advocate Sabita Bhandari Baral as Attorney General. Baral, a former National Information Commission member, replaces Ramesh Badal, who resigned after the change in government as per tradition.
