Police refuse to register complaint against Rabi Lamichhane over passport case

01/31/2023

Kathmandu, Jan. 31: The police have refused to register a complaint against Rabi Lamichhane, chairman of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), over his passport issue.

Yuvraj Paudel had reached the Metropolitan Police Range, Kathmandu to file a complaint saying that Lamichhane had obtained a passport based on his revoked citizenship.

According to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Dan Bahadur Karki, they did not register a case over this issue as the Supreme Court is yet to issue the full text on Lamichhane’s citizenship case.

The Supreme Court dismissed Rabi Lamichhane's position as a Member of Parliament on Friday, ruling that he had not completed the legal process for reviving his Nepali citizenship after renouncing his US citizenship.

Lamichhane obtained the citizenship certificate of Nepal from the District Administration Office (DAO) in Kathmandu only on Sunday.

Paudel demanded action against Lamichhane under Section 10(1) of the Immigration Act, 2049, saying that the RSP president had obtained a Nepali passport while he was an American citizen and had committed a punishable act as per Section 5 of the Immigration Act, 2049 by using an invalid citizenship to obtain the passport.
