Darfur, Sept. 2: A deadly landslide devastated a village in the Marra Mountains area of western Sudan with reports stating that over 1,000 people have been killed, with only one survivor, the Sudan Liberation Movement (Army) said on Monday, Reutersreported.
The Sudan Liberation Movement, which is being led by Abdelwahid Mohamed Nour, said in a statement that the landslide struck the village in the western region on August 31.
The Sudanese movement that controls the affected area located in the Darfur region appealed to the United Nations and international aid agencies to help in recovering the bodies of the victims, which includes men, women and children.
The Sudan Liberation Movement said the village where the landslide took place “has now been completely levelled to the ground.”
The Sudanese residents took refuge in the Marra Mountains area where food and medication are insufficient after escaping the raging war between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in North Darfur state.
The civil war, which has been continuing for the past two years, has left almost half the population of Sudan facing crisis levels of hunger and led millions to migrate from their homes with the capital of North Darfur state, Al-Fashir, being under fire.-Agencies
