India-Nepal Security Talks Reaffirm Defence Cooperation, Explore Defence Manufacturing Ties

06/24/2025

New Delhi, June 24: India and Nepal reaffirmed their commitment to deepen security and defence cooperation during the Sixteenth Meeting of the India-Nepal Bilateral Consultative Group on Security Issues (INBCGSI) held in Pune from June 23 to 24, 2025.

The Indian delegation was led by Munu Mahawar, Additional Secretary (North) at India’s Ministry of External Affairs, while the Nepali side was headed by Gahendra Rajbhandari, Joint Secretary (South Asia) at Nepal’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Delegates included senior officials from both countries’ foreign and defence ministries, as well as representatives from the Indian and Nepali armies.

The two sides held substantive and forward-looking discussions on a broad spectrum of defence and security matters. These included military hardware support, capacity-building through training programs, joint military exercises, and cooperation in disaster response and humanitarian assistance.

In a significant move toward defence industrial collaboration, the delegations jointly visited several public and private sector defence manufacturing units in Pune. The visits aimed to explore avenues for technology sharing, co-production, and enhanced defence industrial partnerships, particularly in light of India’s growing defence manufacturing capabilities and Nepal’s modernization priorities.

Both sides underscored the importance of maintaining regular high-level engagement to enhance mutual trust, address emerging security challenges, and build on longstanding military ties rooted in geographic proximity, shared strategic interests, and historical links between their armed forces.

Established in 2003, the INBCGSI serves as the principal institutional mechanism for India-Nepal defence and security dialogue. The latest meeting marked a constructive step forward in maintaining strategic coordination and exploring new areas of cooperation in line with evolving regional dynamics.
