London, July 11: Announcing his international debut at a NATO Summit in Washington, newly inducted UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has shown staunch support to Ukraine in its war against Russia.
Continuing his predecessor Rishi Sunak’s stance toward Ukraine, Starmer went a step ahead in suggesting that strikes inside Russia could be facilitated by British missiles (Storm Shadow).
Starmer’s steadfast support message comes at a time when the US election is approaching in November and Republican contender Donald Trump has announced that he would cut a deal with Russia and end the Russia-Ukraine war.
After overthrowing the Conservative party’s rule for 14 years, the Labour Party leader Keir Starmer became the new PM of Britain and reportedly said that he had a “very good” meeting with Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on the sidelines of the NATO’s 75th anniversary summit.
Keir Starmer said that it was significant for him to “reinforce, in a sense as a message to (Russian President Vladimir) Putin, the resolve of NATO — bigger now than it’s ever been, more united than it’s ever been and absolutely clear-eyed about the threat of Russian aggression,” as quoted by the Associated Press.
Starmer has clearly stated that his government will continue with the previous government led by Conservative’s on the issue of Ukraine aid and that they even supported it while the Labour Party was in the opposition. However, PM Starmer clarified that UK military aid is "for defensive purposes”.
Since the Russia-Ukraine war began in February 2022, the United Kingdom saw three Conservative Prime Ministers (Boris Johonson, Liz Truss, Rishi Sunak) but all of them fully supported Ukraine's stance and pushed for advanced military weapons for Ukraine.
After arriving in Washington to attend the summit, Starmer said that his meetings will be “an opportunity to make sure that those relationships are reset, for me to be able to say that our position on the world stage — leading on issues like defense and security, on climate change, and on energy — are so important.”-Agencies
