Indian Foreign Secretary calls on Foreign Affairs Minister Rana

08/12/2024

Kathmandu, Aug. 12: Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Arju Rana Deuba held talks with Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, who is currently visiting Nepal.

The meeting, held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, covered a range of topics including bilateral relations, economic and development assistance, and various projects.

A key topic of discussion was the need for additional air routes to Nepal to enhance air connectivity between Nepal and India.

Minister Dr. Rana requested that the Government of India consider expanding air routes to alleviate the challenges faced by Bhairahawa and Pokhara airports, which currently rely on the Simara route for incoming flights.

Nepal has been seeking new routes through Nepalgunj and Mahendranagar to address these operational challenges.

Additionally, Dr. Rana addressed India’s initiative to establish a laboratory for testing the quality of vegetables and fruits imported through the Nepal-India border areas.

The meeting also included discussions on the progress of the Pancheshwar Project, with most issues having been resolved and the remainder to be tackled by a technical group.

Other topics covered were the release of water from the Tanakpur Dam canal, flood control measures for the Badganga, and Rapti rivers, and the opening of the Darchula bridge.

Both sides agreed on the importance of continuing discussions on trade and transportation.

Minister Dr. Rana expressed gratitude to the Government of India for their assistance in rescuing and supporting victims of the Jajarkot earthquake.
