Paris, June 1: Two people died and as many as 192 were injured as celebrations for Paris Saint-Germain’s (PSG) victory in the Champions League final took a grim turn, the French interior ministry said on Sunday. Clashes erupted in various parts of the country, especially in Paris, where 491 people were arrested overnight for vandalism.
Twenty-two police officers and seven firefighters were injured as hundreds of fires were reported, the ministry said, adding that 264 vehicles were torched as football fans went on a frenzy celebrating PSG’s maiden Champions League win, the biggest prize in European club football for the first time in their history.
A total of 559 people were arrested across France, and 300 detained, for setting off fireworks and creating chaos.
A 23-year-old man, riding a scooter in central Paris, was killed after being hit by a vehicle, the prosecutor’s office said. Around 730km from Paris, a 17-year-old boy from Dax died of his injuries after being stabbed in the chest late on Saturday evening, BBC reported citing local media.
Dax Mayor Julien Dubois said his “thoughts are with the young victim, his family and friends,” BBC reported.
“We are floored by all the drama tonight,” he wrote on social media. “It is advisable to quickly shed light on these facts in order to severely punish the perpetrator.”
While projectiles were hurled at riot police as the clashes erupted near the city’s Champs-Élysées avenue and PSG’s Parc des Princes stadium, the majority of fans celebrated PSG’s 5-0 win over Inter Milan, which was a theatre of car horns, cheers, and singing in the street.
The riot police fired tear gas and water cannons to push back surging crowds as thousands of supporters moved down the boutique-lined boulevard. At the Place de la Bastille, there were joyous scenes as fans climbed onto the base of the famous column, singing, dancing and letting off flares, while those around joined in.
A police officer was hit accidentally by fireworks in northwest France and placed in an artificial coma because of serious eye injuries, the national police service said.
Security had been tightened up in anticipation of potential post-match violence and 5,400 police officers were deployed on the Champs-Élysées, other key parts of Paris, and its nearby suburbs.-Agencies
